It is excellent to see confirmed in the press that the two schemes which were managed by Weeeco in 2009 and continue to be managed by Weeeco in 2010 bucked the trend for their membership growth (WEEE Light +40.74% and Northern Compliance +30.25%) against the loss of overall producers registered with schemes for 2010 of -7.86%.

I congratulate Weeeco’s EEE team which have achieved a phenomenal success in a difficult year, especially given the smart way in which this has been achieved via E Mail Campaigns, Online Producer Challenge, Breakfast Seminars and Direct Telesales; and without the significant spending of members money on advertising and retention literature undertaken by many other schemes.

This is a perfect opportunity to tell all the producers out there of our retention success through continued excellent service beyond what is required and cost effectiveness by securing growth in 2010 registrations in 2009 against a back drop of poor compliance offer and service elsewhere resulting in loss of membership for most schemes.

Producer registration

Last week (February 11) also saw the Environment Agency publish figures showing that the number of registered producers has fallen by 7.86% - from 5,622 to 5,180 - between 2009 and 2010.

While the list does not outline the market share of each schemes' membership, which in turn reflects the amount of WEEE they have to collect, it does show that, while the majority of schemes saw their membership fall between 2009 and 2010, that decline was generally in line with the overall fall in producer numbers.

However, Biffa's Transform scheme, which was initially not approved by the EA for this year (see letsrecycle.com story), has seen its membership fall by 30.1% - from 206 in 2009 to 144 for 2010.

Above-average falls in registered members are also shown for Budget Pack - down by 10.85% from 258 to 230 members, and WEEECare, which saw its membership fall from 1187 to 1070 - a decline of 9.86%.

Despite this, as was the case in 2009, WEEECare still has the most members of any scheme, more than 300 ahead of Valpak which has 705 - a drop from the 729 it had in 2009, but still representing an increase in its share of registered producers from 12.97% to 13.61% (the scheme also runs Valpak Scotia, which has nine members).

ERP, Electrolink and REPIC all saw falls in their membership that were less than the 7.86% and now have 63, 211 and 140 respectively.

The most significant increases in membership were achieved by Northern Compliance, which saw its membership grow by 30.25% from 119 to 155 producers, Waste Electrical Recycling Compliance Scheme, which grew its membership by 168%, from 16 to 43, and WEEE Light, which increased its members by 40.74%, from 27 to 38.

Weeeco and VPL will of course continue to promote the information above and I look forward to a similar result in 2010 for 2011 registrations not forgetting our new opportunity LA Compliance all coming together to provide best value for Producers, Distributors, Retailers and End User without the need to build unrealistic and costly to the producer reserves.
