The Strategic Health Authority

A Northern Strategic Health Authority (SHA) became the first in the country to tackle the growing issue of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).

The Commercial Procurement Collaborative commissioned WE³ Recycled Ltd a distributor of Weeeco, to undertake a benchmarking exercise of its 16 NHS Trusts and Primary Care Trusts throughout South Yorkshire (serving approximately 400 establishments).

WE³ Recycled Ltd was set up with assistance from Weeeco to help businesses and organisations nationally deal with their WEEE liabilities and was engaged to establish the volumes of historical WEEE at the SHA’s many NHS Trusts and Primary Care Trusts. Historic WEEE is electrical equipment purchased before 13th August 2005 (either accumulated or still in use).

The objective of the benchmarking exercise was to asses how much electrical waste has been accumulated by their NHS Trusts and to look at its disposal in an environmentally and socially responsible manner in order to comply with the WEEE Directive. Once the scale of the historic WEEE has been calculated, WE³ will draft a Pre-Qualifying Questionnaire and a Tender Specification to enable companies to tender for the WEEE disposal contract.

The exercise covers all sites within the SHA’s area that have registered an interest in participating. Although quantities of WEEE can not be determined prior to the audit, the experts at WE³ predict that there will be significant quantities which will include the disposal of biomedical waste, estates waste, business waste and general waste.

“With the DEFRA deadline for the introduction of WEEE legislation in the UK being January 1st 2007 it’s important that we act now to comply with our responsibilities. We selected WE³ Recycled Ltd because of the reputation they have, and because we have found them to be a constant source of up-to-date information regarding the Directive. We’re thrilled that the SHA is leading the way and showing a great example to the rest of the country,” commented the project officer for the Commercial Procurement Collaborative.

The NHS Commercial Procurement Collaborative has been working in partnership with the Regional Development Agency, to help their SME’s win contracts from the National Health Service bodies in the region. “We’re proud to be working with WE3 to unlocking some of the perceived barriers experienced by the region’s businesses in bidding for NHS contracts,” added the project officer.
